My equipment guide for beginners and experts

How many times would I have saved time and money if I had had tips from experienced craftsmen and model builders? Often, I only discovered them after trying them out. If it turned out not to be the right thing, I not only lost money but was also often annoyed that my project wasn’t progressing. Even in videos and community websites, you can find good tips, but they are often scattered, and sometimes not even Google Translate helped understand tips from other countries.

So that you can navigate better, I have divided my tips and products into three areas.

Models: Here, I list my past, current, and planned models. Occasionally, I may recommend sets that I’ve discovered and want to recommend.

Tools: Here, you’ll find all tools, whether it’s the small hand drill or the circular saw for model builders. Also, consumables like sandpaper and brushes.

Materials: Apart from ready-made sets, I like to use other materials or replace existing parts with higher quality or more authentic ones. Here, you’ll get a list of materials from A like acrylic paint to Z like soldering tin.

Note: Even though this is nothing new, I still want to draw your attention to the fact that the links marked with an asterisk are affiliate links. If you buy a product through these links, I receive a small commission from the seller. But you don’t pay a cent more. Thanks to the opportunity Amazon provides, you can support me this way. Of course, you can also buy things elsewhere, but I can still recommend the products.

Maybe your next project too?

Feel free to share your experiences and the progress of your construction with me, if you’re also working on a project.

My used tools

You might have come to this page with an interest in 3D printing but are not a wood model builder. Except for a few exceptions, I usually need all my tools for all the projects I’m working on. Although my favorite pliers are not large, they are the top choice for modeling as well as for removing the support structure of prints. If you have any questions about the individual items, feel free to reach out to me.

Hand tools

Since day one, my favorite tool in the workshop has been the KNIPEX side cutter*, the most important tool. My first scalpel was a simple metal model. However, because it hurts the fingers after extended use, I looked for something new. Since then, I’ve been using this scalpel/cutter with a comfortable rubber grip*.

I also use the following tools. However, I only link to things that I have in my toolbox and can recommend to you.

Electric tools

Especially for those who like to deviate from the set and custom-cut something, I can recommend Proxxon tools. I started with the drilling and milling device here. Comparable to a Dremel, but Proxxon devices are quieter and can also be operated with less power. This makes the results significantly more precise.

To start, I got the PROXXON engraving set with the drilling and milling device MICROMAT*. As an absolute highlight, I still find the PROXXON foot switch* brilliant; it allows you to turn the device on and off with a foot press. Simply ingenious for me, as hands are usually already full.

Especially for 3D Printing

My 3D printer is almost an antique; it’s the Ender 3 from the first generation. Nevertheless, it’s still an incredibly reliable printer that achieves excellent results for my projects. The difference from the newer models is that they now have many convenience features, such as automatic bed leveling, a computer interface, or a quieter printing process.

So here’s the accessories I use:

For filaments, I really like those from ERYONE. They are of good quality, and the prices are really great. Look out for offers. ERYONE often has discounts, especially on Amazon.
